Michel Chapoutier makes some of the best wine in the world and his 2018 La Bernardine is another winner. This is one of the top values from Chateauneuf du Pape and it’s already delicious and eminently drinkable.
“Sports an inky color as well as a powerful bouquet of black raspberries, crushed violets, incense, and ground pepper. It’s ripe, concentrated, and has plenty of ripe tannins. This beautifully elegant wine might just be the greatest vintage for this cuvée I’ve tasted.” – Jeb Dunnuck
The blending of grape varieties is a characteristic of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. In ”La Bernardine” red, Grenache is the main grape used in the blend, with a smaller proportion of Syrah and Mourvèdre. The Grenache is a grape variety that brings a natural sweetness to the blend, which gives the wine elegance, silky tannins and great finesse.
Grenache | Syrah | Mourvèdre
Appearance: intense crimson-red.
Nose: Complex and subtle, blackcurrant and plum followed by roasted coffee and cinnamon, cherry, morello cherry.
Palate: Opening into spicy (licorice) and fruity aromas.
The history of the Chapoutier family stretches back to the early nineteenth century when current owner Michel Chapoutier’s great-, great-, great-grandfather Marius purchased an estate and some vineyards in the now famous village of Tain l’Hermitage in the Northern Rhône Valley. Marius Chapoutier made history in the region when he became the first grape grower there to vinify his own fruit.
